Astrophysicists Uncover Striking Ring of Magnetic Fields Around Milky Way’s Black Hole in Polarized Light

A team of astronomers has made a groundbreaking discovery regarding the powerful magnetic fields that swirl around the black hole located at the center of our Milky Way galaxy. Thanks to new images from the Event Horizon Telescope (EHT), researchers have been able to see, for the first time in polarized light, a ring of magnetic fields surrounding Sagittarius A* black hole. These magnetic fields are remarkably similar to those observed around M87* black hole at the core of the M87 Galaxy.

The discovery of these organized and twisted magnetic fields near the black hole was made possible through polarized light images, which allowed astronomers to isolate the magnetic field lines of the black hole. The presence of strong magnetic fields around both M87* and Sagittarius A* suggests that these systems may share a universal and possibly fundamental characteristic.

Supermassive black holes are found at the center of galaxies and are significantly larger in mass compared to our Sun, with masses ranging from millions to billions of times greater. Although they emerged early in the universe, their origins remain a mystery due to their immense gravitational pull that makes them impossible to observe directly. However, with EHT capturing images of M87* in 2019 and Sagittarius A* in 2022, researchers were able to view the halo of light that forms due to inflow and outflow matter and gas around black holes.

Angelo Ricarte, a member of Harvard’s Black Hole Initiative and co-lead of the project, highlighted how imaging polarized light emitted by hot gas surrounding black holes allows researchers to directly understand their structure and strength. Mariafelicia De Laurentis, deputy scientist at EHT and professor at University Naples Federico II in Italy added that this discovery opens up new possibilities for future studies on these fascinating entities.

This discovery is an important step towards understanding more about supermassive black holes and their properties. It also shows how advanced technology like EHT can help us uncover new information about these mysterious objects that are difficult to study directly due to their intense gravitational pull.
