Boosting Your Mental Health by Mastering the Art of Being Alone

I recently spent a few hours alone on a quiet, winding trail. The path was challenging to follow and covered in snow, but the warmth of the sun made it all worth it. As I climbed uphill, I missed my partner but felt grateful for the time with my sister, whom I don’t see often.

Being alone can evoke a wide range of emotions, from curiosity and anxiety to joy. It was a welcome period of solitude for me, and when I returned to civilization, I felt calmer and more clear-headed than when I had started out.

Solitude is something that adults in the UK and US spend around one-third of their waking lives alone. This increases as we age, and many of us live alone in greater proportions than ever before. A recent survey of 75 countries shows that 17 of them have more than 25 per cent solo households. As social creatures, we’ve historically been steered away from time alone. However, research suggests that spending time away from the crowd may actually be vital to our health and well-being.

Moreover, studies have shown that spending time alone can improve our mental health and relationships with others. For example, it can help us develop better self-awareness and communication skills. It can also help us reconnect with ourselves and our inner selves after being disconnected for too long due to social demands or external pressures. Additionally, it can provide an opportunity for introspection and reflection on what truly matters in life
