Governor Signs Law Banning Social Networks for Children Under 14 in the US

Florida Governor Ron DeSantis signed one of the most stringent bans on minors’ social network usage on Monday. If the measure survives legal challenges, children under 14 years old will not be allowed to have any social media accounts, while adolescents aged 14 to 15 will need parental authorization.

The bill also mandates technology companies to delete underage minors’ accounts from social media platforms and set up age verification mechanisms for websites with explicit content. This law, set to take effect on January 1, 2025, aims to safeguard young people from online predators and the detrimental effects of social media on mental health.

Despite facing legal challenges, supporters of the bill in Florida remain resolute in their efforts to defend it in court. Social media companies have already declared the law unconstitutional and vowed to challenge it. The measure seeks to limit addictive features on social media platforms, such as automatic notifications and endless scrolling, which contribute to excessive screen time and negative impacts on mental health.

Similar measures have been proposed in other states but have faced legal hurdles. The debate over regulating social media for minors continues, with concerns about free speech rights and online safety at its core. Ultimately, the goal of these laws is to create a safer online environment for children and adolescents in an era where technology plays a critical role in their lives.
