Hard Knocks: Expanding the Pool of Teams

NFL considering expanding rules for mandatory preseason participation in Hard Knocks

The league is considering expanding the pool of teams that can be selected for the preseason Hard Knocks series. Currently, only certain teams are exempt from being chosen. These include teams with first-year head coaches, teams that have made the playoffs in the past two seasons, and teams that have done the show in the last 10 years. However, if a proposal is approved, these exemptions will change.

Teams with first-year head coaches will no longer be exempt from being chosen. Additionally, teams that have done the show in the past eight years and those participating in the in-season version of Hard Knocks in the current or next season will also become eligible. The exemption based on playoff appearances will be eliminated altogether.

Last year, only four teams were potential candidates for Hard Knocks: Jets, Commanders, Bears, and Saints. Despite not wanting to participate, the Jets were chosen. If this proposal is passed, it could become more common for teams to volunteer for the series or be chosen against their wishes in the future. The decision will be voted on by team owners on Tuesday.
