Former Senator Joseph Lieberman, a dedicated friend of Israel, passes away in New York

In New York on March 27, at the age of 82, former Senator Joe Lieberman from Connecticut passed away. The Washington Post reported the news, citing a statement from his family. According to relatives, the cause of death was complications following a fall.

Lieberman was known for being the first Orthodox Jew in the US Senate. In 2000, he ran for the position of US vice president alongside presidential candidate Al Gore, but they ultimately lost to Republican candidates George W. Bush and Dick Cheney. Lieberman had visited Israel most recently shortly after the attacks on October 7.

Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu paid tribute to Lieberman on his X-blog, praising him as an exemplary public servant, American patriot, and staunch defender of the Jewish people and the Jewish state. Netanyahu recalled his first meeting with Lieberman decades ago, noting his honesty, integrity, civic courage, moral sense, and fearlessness in defending the truth.
