Pope Shows Improvement in Health, Commends Israeli and Arab Fathers Who Lost Daughters in Conflict

In preparation for Holy Week, Pope Francis has been battling winter illnesses like the flu, bronchitis, or a cold. This year’s schedule poses additional challenges due to his fragile health. Despite this, the 87-year-old Pontiff appeared more stable and able to address the audience on his own during his weekly general audience.

During the audience, Francis shared the story of two men in the audience hall who have lost their daughters in the Middle East conflict. The men, one Palestinian and one Israeli, had formed a friendship despite their grief and the violence that had affected both of them. This story of friendship and reconciliation was shared by the Pope as an example of overcoming enmity and working together for peace.

Before the general audience, Francis met with the two men in private, highlighting their powerful story and shared grief. The book “Apeirogon” by Colum McCann details their journey and the bond that has formed between them. This meeting was an opportunity for the Pope to acknowledge the pain and suffering caused by conflict while also emphasizing the importance of forgiveness, healing, and unity.

In his prepared text, Pope Francis renewed his appeal for peace and urged an immediate end to ongoing conflicts around the world. He emphasized that true peace can only be achieved through understanding, dialogue, and respect for all people’s dignity regardless of race or religion.
