Penn Hills benefits from Citizens Science Lab and YBMKQ partnership with STEAM education opportunities

A new collaboration between the Citizens Science Lab and Young Black Motivated Kings and Queens organization in Penn Hills will provide STEAM education to numerous children over the next five years. Dr. Andre Samuel, founder of the Citizens Science Lab, spearheaded an experiment that demonstrated the types of activities young participants will engage in at the community center on a daily basis.

Dr. Samuel emphasized the significance of this partnership for black and underserved communities, highlighting the dearth of African Americans holding PhDs in biological and life sciences nationwide. By introducing more black students to science, it is hoped that this collaboration will address issues that directly affect their communities.

Young Black Motivated Kings and Queens organization provides after-school programming and summer camps for elementary through high school students at an affordable cost to families. With approximately 60 kids participating in their daily after-school activities, incorporating science programming into their offerings will enhance educational opportunities available to these students even further.
